Background Youth With A Mission (YWAM) has been operating in Auckland since YWAM started in New Zealand in 1967. Over the next couple decades YWAMers in Auckland helped establish many of the other YWAM bases around the nation. In an effort to "de-centralize" YWAM in Auckland scalled way back for a season. In the '90's Frank Naea invited a number of the ministries back to Auckland and some of them took over the stewardship of some of the old Auckland Children's Hospital buildings. (see picture of one of them below.) What's in a NAME? In the late '90's YWAM requested the blessing of the local Maori iwi as an expression of respect and honour in a similar way Abraham connected with Malcisodek. Not only did the local iwi respond with gratitude, but they gifted YWAM in New Zealand the Maori name: Te Ao Marama, which means the coming - and sending forth - of the light.
